What is a U.S. Visa?

U.S. Visa is the official document that allows you entry to the United States of America. This could be for a short period (Tourism, Business, Conference) or a long period like a permanent stay. U.S. Visas can only be secured after several interviews & meeting the requirements to visit the U.S.

Being ahead in terms of technology, health care, defense & other sectors, the U.S. welcomes thousands of visitors due to the smooth government policies and other factors mentioned earlier.

Visiting or migrating to the U.S. from Zambia is not easy as you think because of the thousands of Zambians applying yearly for U.S Visas. In this article, we’ll explain the procedure for how to apply for U.S Visa in Zambia and the application requirements.

U.S Application Requirements 2022

Before Zambians are considered for a U.S Visa award, they must possess the following:

  • An immigration passport must be valid for 6 months after the intended stay.
  • A passport photograph (2” x 2”).  See photograph requirements.
  • A US visa application form. ( The US Embassy does not accept handwritten application forms)
  • Proof of payment of Application fee. (Application fee is not refundable)
  •  Proof of financial status – your original bank statement from a recognized commercial bank
  • Applicants may be asked to provide other documents substantiating their travel purpose.

How To Apply for U.S Visa

Zambians wishing to migrate to the U.S. either on a short or long-term basis should follow the steps below to apply for U.S. Visa.

Step 1. Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 by visiting: https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/

For Students: The person paying for your trip must be the person whose documents you are submitting as your sponsor.

Ensure all the blanks are filled with accurate information. An incomplete application shall not be processed.

Step 2. Schedule an Interview Appointment

Create your personal U.S. visa account online at https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-zm/niv.

Print your Payment Slip and pay the non-refundable $160 (fee payable in Zambian Kwacha) MRV fee at any Zanaco bank branch.

After waiting for two business days, schedule your visa appointment online at https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-zm/niv.  Interviews for nonimmigrant visas are typically held on Mondays and Wednesdays.  However, as appointment slots fill up quickly, we advise applicants to begin the application process at least several weeks prior to the intended date of travel.  Additionally, we advise applicants to not book their travel until they have received their visas.  Please keep in mind, there are no interviews on American and Zambian holidays when the embassy is closed.

Step 3. Interview for Your Visa with the Consular Officer

Arrive at the U.S. Embassy on the day of your appointment with your confirmation page DS-160.

During your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are qualified to receive a visa, and if so, which visa category is appropriate based on your purpose of travel. You will need to establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive the category of visa for which you are applying. Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans will be taken as part of your application process.

Arrive at the U.S. Embassy on the day of your appointment with your confirmation page DS-160, passport, and photo. See photo requirements here.

Step 4. Return to Collect Your Passport and Visa

Passport pick-up is typically held on Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 pm. You can authorize someone else in writing to pick up your passport if you cannot make it for pick up. The bearer of the letter must bring their ID card and your receipt.
