What You Need to Know About Mobile Phones & Smartphones

A lot of people have been wondering why some phones are called ‘Smartphones’  but are still “mobile phones”. The two words are inextricably different, so no point of confusion.

In this article, we’ll familiarize you with everything you need to know about the two words.

Firstly, let’s define the two terms;

Mobile Phones: 

Mobile phones, Cell phones or Handphones are portable gadgets or telephones (wired phones) that make and receives calls via an automated radio frequency link while used within a telephone service area. The automated radio frequency link creates a connection to the switching systems of a phone operator, which grants access to the public switched telephone network known as PSTN. Modernized mobile phones operate on cellular network architecture and that’s why it’s called ‘Cellular phones’ in Northern America. The 2000s-era mobile phones sponsor a range of other services such as SMS, MMS, E-mail, internet-access, short-range wireless communication (Bluetooth), video games, digital photography, and lots more…Mobile Phones with the above characteristics and capabilities are known as “feature phones” while others with advanced computing capabilities are called “Smartphones”. The first handheld wireless phone was Motorola which was displayed by John F. Mitchell and Martin Cooper in 1973.

Smartphones

Smartphones are mobile phones with multi-purpose functions and mobile computing devices. These phones are segregated from “feature phones” because of their long-lasting hardware capabilities and extensive mobile operating systems. Some of the key features of smartphones are; Multimedia functionality (music, video, cameras & gaming), voice & video calls, sensors (magnetometer, barometer, gyroscope, proximity sensors, and accelerators). They also support wireless communications protocols such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Google Maps, and satellite navigation.

The first smartphones were sold primarily towards the enterprise market, forcing to bridge the functionality of standalone personal digital assistant (PDA) devices with cellular telephony support. The growth and development of the smartphones were enabled by advances in MOSFET (metal-oxide-silicon field-effect transistor) semiconductor device fabrication. The MOSFET (MOS transistor) was invented by Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs in 1959.

Similarities Between Mobile Phones & Smartphones

Mobile Phones and Smartphones are both mobile devices for sending text messages and making or receiving calls. Both also operate a wireless communication medium (Bluetooth).

Difference Between Mobile Phone & Smartphones

Smartphones have some outstanding functionalities in which Mobile Phones doesn’t have. Mobile Phones keyboards are sometimes physically while Smartphones’ are generally virtual. With Smartphones, you can access your E-mail account or any other internet services at ease. Mobile Phones operates only on Java as the default internet browser. From findings, people think Mobile Phones were generally made for making and answering calls while Smartphones were made for all-round internet-based services.

Note: Smartphones and Mobile Phones are mobile and durable.
