Media from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are eligible to apply.
The impact of climate change touches virtually every element of our society. But misinformation and climate denial undermine how media reach audiences, and devalue the good work many are already producing. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the worsening economic situation place immense strains on budgets and newsroom resources. But we cannot ignore an issue that will define the legacy we leave future generations.
From any angle – economic, environmental, health, political, science, social – the story of climate change needs reliable information and a fact-based approach, one that engages audiences, makes them aware of the stakes, and allows them to engage in positive action. Audiences need hope; we need a professional media to help provide it.

Who can Apply?
WAN-IFRA’s Climate Change and Environmental Reporting grants are designed to aid newsrooms across Africa in tackling storytelling that:
- Demonstrates clear relevance to local communities
- Addresses the big issues, highlights the underreported stories, or exposes new angles
- Showcases innovative solutions that have impact
- Promotes efforts towards positive change and shows people how they can take action
- Explores innovative storytelling formats to reach and engage audiences
*A successful application will clearly demonstrate some or all of these criteria.
All formats, including multi-format storytelling, will be considered. Content can be produced in any language, but must also be available in English.

Media from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are eligible to apply.

What is the Benefit of WAN-IFRA Media Freedom African Media Grants?
- Newsrooms can apply for up to $10,000 USD. Only successful applicants will be contacted and they will have 10 weeks to complete their project. Funding for this initiative comes via the generous support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark
- WAN-IFRA Media Freedom will ask for copies of all work produced under the grant agreement and will showcase this work across its digital platforms.
How Long will the Program Last?
Projects should be completed within a 10 week period (10th November 2021 – 15th January 2022). The work must be published by the end of the grant agreement (and if not, a clear schedule for publication must be provided), details of which must be included as part of your grant agreement
