St Andrew’s School, Turi is highly respected in Kenya and regarded as one of the leading international schools in East Africa. Numbering 550 pupils, it comprises two semi-autonomous schools: a Preparatory School of circa 220 pupils between the ages of 3 and 13 and a Senior School of circa 330 pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. It is fully coeducational and the great majority are boarders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The successful candidate will need to be able to support the School’s aims and Christian ethos.
- Have solid knowledge and understanding of counselling theory and practice as well as excellent communication skills and high level of confidentiality.
- Have an understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people as well as knowledge of the mental health and counselling aspect.
- Be able to build non-judgmental relationships with the school community based on trust and respect in order to fulfil the requirements of the position.
- Provide individual and group counselling to students with identified concerns and needs.
- Help students process their problems and plan goals and action.
- Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians and teachers to support the well-being of students.
- Develop mental health resources and organize mental health activities to create and enhance awareness on mental health.
- Implement an effective referral and follow-up process as needed
- Plan and deliver routine wellness sessions for students, parents and staff.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- A degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology or a related field
- Registered with the Counsellor’s Professional Body in Kenya
- Minimum of 2 years experience with a demonstrated role in counselling children and young people
- Ability to work well in a multi-cultural environment
- Ability to identify and respond to students needs

- Passionate about working with children and young adults
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work
- Excellent listening & problem solving skills
- Must be patient & compassionate
- High level of integrity
- In-depth knowledge of preparing and reviewing contracts, invoicing and negotiation terms.
