The United Nations entity for gender equality and women’s empowerment (UN Women) in Zimbabwe cordially invites interested youths (15-35 years) to apply to join its Youth Steering Committee. This initiative is part of UN Women’s efforts to accelerate meaningful youth engagement and inclusion, foster accountability for youth and promote impact-oriented inter-generational dialogues, mentorship, and leadership toward advancing gender equality in Zimbabwe. The Youth Steering Committee will draw strategic guidance from the UN Women Zimbabwe Country Office. It will be grounded on the core tenets of the UN Women’s Youth and Gender Equality StrategyGeneration Equality, and the UN Youth2030 Strategy.

Roles of the Youth Steering Committee

The Youth Steering Committee will be a voluntary structure with the primary role of advising the UN Women Zimbabwe Country Office on mechanisms to meaningfully engage young people while supporting the amplification of youth voices and facilitating their participation in key processes to influence policy, advocacy, and programming on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) in the country. The specific duties and responsibilities of the Steering Committee shall include:

  • Dedicating at least two hours for committee meetings quarterly. The meetings will be conducted virtually as well as in person on dates agreed by the committee members and UN Women
  • Providing input to UN Women’s programming to foster youth participation and integrate the interests and needs of young people in various contexts
  • Participating in relevant events and initiatives organized by UN Women where possible

Composition of the UN Women Youth Steering Committee

The youth steering committee will be composed of:

  • a total of NINE members: diverse girls, boys, young women, and young men, including representatives of youth-focused organizations between the ages of 15-35 segmented into three clusters (15-24, 25-29,30-35)
  • 15-24 years – three seats
  • 25-29 years – three seats
  • 30-35 years – three seats

Gender balance and representativeness based on sector, age, and disability will be considered consistent with the Leaving No One Behind principle.

WHO CAN APPLY?

A call for applications will be issued to invite youths with considerable potential and a track record of work related to gender equality and youth development. A selection committee will be set up to shortlist candidates and conduct background checks for the shortlisted candidates after the application deadline. Successful candidates will be informed soon after the selection process has ended. UN Women will organize an orientation and training of confirmed members during the onboarding. The Youth Steering Committee members will serve for two years only. New members will be recruited to replace the outgoing committee. Some outgoing committee members may be retained to preserve institutional memory, provided they still meet the above requirements.

Characteristics of a prospective committee member

Prospective members should:

 be between 15 years and 35 years of age at the time of application
 have a good awareness of gender issues and commit to the Values of UN Women, including respect for all women and girls
 have considerable understanding of, and interest in development issues affecting young people
 be persons of integrity and have a good standing in their communities
 be willing to volunteer and collaborate with others to ensure that various gender inequalities are eliminated and the rights of women and girls are fulfilled
