Helping Women Graduate from Extreme Poverty The BOMA Project is a U.S. nonprofit and Kenyan NGO with a proven track record, measurable results and a transformative approach to alleviating poverty and building resiliency in the drylands of Africa. Our Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) replaces aid with sustainable income and helps women to graduate from extreme poverty by giving them the tools they need to start small businesses in their communities. With this new and diversified source of income, they can feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, accumulate savings for long-term stability, survive drought and adapt to a changing climate.
- Livelihood Officer
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with all the program staff in the implementation of the program.
- Engage local community members and leaders to form BOMA Locational Committee to support and inform program activities.
- Organize community events to sensitize communities on REAP programs.
- Assist in the customization of REAP training materials and handbook.
- Recruit and train Mentors and eventually oversee, supervise and monitor their work.
- Support community mapping activities, market assessments and evaluation.
- Oversee recruitment of ultra-poor women into the program by leading community entries and targeting process.
- Oversee the business plan process conducted by mentors and participants.
- Supervise and oversee the training and subsequently funding REAP beneficiaries.
- Facilitate linkages opportunity for BOMA businesses through the work of the Linkages Officer.
- Monitor and ensure quality through Performance Insight System on daily basis.
- Run reports and share upwards and downwards.
- Lead the formation of Savings Association among BOMA businesses in accordance with the REAP Implementer Guide.
- Work with local County Government Technical Staff to provide training and support to BOMA participants.
- Spot-check performance of REAP and assist Mentors in troubleshooting of tablets and basic skills.
- Prepare accurate and timely monitoring and field reports and other project documentation as required.
- Represent the organization in meetings at the grass-root level.
- Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to the BOMA Project
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or representatives.
Qualifications;
- At least a Diploma in community development or any other relevant field.
- A minimum of three years experience in a similar position in Northern Kenya.
- Demonstrable ability to coordinate field activities.
- Proven competency/experience in data collection and basic analysis.
- Possession of self-drive; able to work with minimal supervision.
- Good report writing and computer skills.
- BOMA Mentor
Responsibilities:
- Manage the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), BOMA’s program that helps low-income women start businesses to uplift their living standards.
- Provide mentoring to the agreed number of small business enterprises.
- In a collaborative process with the community (Participatory Wealth Ranking) and BOMA Location Committees, target and identify eligible women for the program, based on BOMA’s criteria.
- Meet with established business groups, help them make decisions about their business and offer other guidance as needed.
- Conduct/deliver business and savings skills training and mentor (provide guidance and support) to the businesses in the designated location and surrounding manyattas.
- Survey individuals and collect data on living standards, participation in savings groups, and other relevant information.
- Represent BOMA in the designated location, including as a representative for the organization in local development committees.
- Report on the businesses and savings groups’ performances to the Field Officer.
- Perform a minimum of agreed visits per week to the business groups and savings groups for which you are responsible and upload all data collected at a minimum rate of once a month.
Qualifications;
- At least a Diploma in Nutrition, community Health, social work, or another related discipline.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills; candidates should be able to relate well to both the women with whom we work and the BOMA Field Officer.
- At least two years experience in similar work; with proven experience in data collection
- Be self-driven, and able to work with minimal staff supervision
- Must be a native of the respective ward you are applying for with working knowledge of English, Swahili, and the local language.
- Have a valid motorcycle license and has experience on how to ride a motorcycle.
