The Organization of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers is a member-based insurance organization that aims to promote the business and practice of insurance across Eastern and Southern Africa. The principal activity of the Organization of Eastern and Southern Africa (OESAI) is to encourage and enhance co-operation in the field of insurance and reinsurance and their related activities among companies operating in the Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

The Secretary General reports to the Chairperson and the Management Board of the Oganisation of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers in a manner that which ensures that the Secretariat discharges its mandate and obligations consistent with the OESAI Constitution.

About the Position

 The position is currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. This may change as the Management Board makes decisions on the most suitable Host Country for OESAI.

Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative/Operational Function – day-to-day running and administration of OESAI.

  • Promote the OESAI brand, Partnerships and Programmes to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences regionally and internationally.
  • Coordinating preparations for OESAI’s Seminars, annual conferences, General Meetings and Meetings of the Management Board.
  • Develop an annual work plan and budget for the Secretariat´s activities
  • Implementation and compliance with board directives and resolutions
  • Convening general and Board Meetings and communicating to members the decisions made and resolutions adopted at General Meetings and Board Meetings;
  • Taking and distributing minutes of the general and Board Meetings
  • Ensure coordinated exchange of information between members of OESAI

Financial management and performance

  • Secure/raise funds and resources to support the Secretariat and other OESAI initiatives in collaboration with the OESAI Partners ensuring that OESAI operates as a commercial self- sustainable entity.
  • Receiving all monies due to OESAI on behalf of OESAI and/or investing the monies of OESAI as directed by the Management Board through the Finance and Investment Policies
  • Ensure that the Organisation operate within approved budget allocations
  • Maintaining OESAI’s books of accounts and oversee preparation of annual audited financial reports for presentation to the members at the Annual General Meeting.

Human Resources

  • Determine staffing needs, recruit and manage staff of the Secretariat.
  • Be responsible for a healthy working environment and development of staff members
  • Engage with and oversee the provision of appropriate staff and consultant contracts
  • Set and evaluate performance targets in compliance with the performance objectives and report to the Board any staff developmental plans.
  • Ensure the training of staff for improved individual and organizational performance in support of OESAI objectives.

Stakeholders Management

  • Assess and evaluate OESAI in relation to stakeholders’ interest and preferences
  • Facilitate sound relationships between the Secretariat, Board and external stakeholders which result in a better understanding of the business of OESAI.
  • Communicate Organisation policy matters and organizational changes to stakeholders

Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction to advance the Organisation’s mission, vision and strategic objectives.
  • Identify, develop and direct the implementation of Organisation strategy and report to the board on performance.
  • Formulate and implement a corporate strategy for creating and maintaining goodwill towards OESAI as exemplary and responsible corporate citizen
  • Main spokesperson of OESAI as an organization:
  • Ensure compliance to all regulatory and internal policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate zero tolerance for corrupt practices and irregularities

Requirements:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Finance, Business Management or related qualification. (An MBA will be a distinct advantage)
  2. At least Ten (10) years work experience in an executive position with a proven track record
  3. Excellent financial literacy. A certification will be an added advantage.
  4. Excellent understanding of regional and global (Re)insurance and related sustainability issues
  5. Experience in managing and building partnerships around common agendas
  6. Ability to work on own initiatives, secure buy-in and support from key sponsors, partners and decision makers
  7. Clear oral and written presentation skills.
  8. Computer Literacy – familiarity with standard office software
  9. Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English, preferably also some ability to communicate in at least one other language
  10. Travel requirements: Willingness to travel and to act independently and work long hours where necessary.v
