Kenya Medical Research – KEMRI

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to the Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.


1. Clerk (Interviewer)

Program Description: The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be conducting a large community-based study of Attractive Targeted Sugar Bait (ATSB) aimed at reducing malaria transmission in western Kenya. The 3-year project is part of a larger international ATSB consortium involving three countries in Africa, and international partners in the UK and USA. As part of this effort, KEMRI is searching for an exceptional trial manager with three years of relevant work experience to lead the study team.

Job Description

The Community Interviewer will report directly to the Research Scientist, he/she will be responsible for consenting study participants, collecting timely and accurate data in his/her assigned households. S/he must be flexible and work within the existing structure, in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity

Essential Requirements:

  • O-level Secondary Education with a Minimum grade of C-(Minus)
  • Good English, Swahili and Dholuo, both spoken and written
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle
  • Knowledge of office computer packages or ability to work with smart phones
  • Must be able to write brief reports and keep records.
  • MUST be a resident or willing to live and work in Alego Usonga

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities.

  • The Community Interviewers’ responsibilities shall include and not be limited to the following:
  • Consent study participants
  • Collect a blood sample by fingerpick (adults) and/or heel prick (infants)
  • Prepare Dried Blood Spots (DBS) on filter paper
  • Prepare Blood slides (BS)
  • Perform a Malaria RDT.
  • Complete study forms accurately and completely
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and tracking of samples and work with the Research
  • Scientist to arrange for transport to the laboratory
  • Conduct interviews with study participants within the study villages
  • Communicate with the Research Scientist on field issues
  • Ensure that one has requisite supplies in good time
  • Attend study field meetings and report on progress of work
  • Be courteous, respectful, proactive, conscientious, punctual, honest, and hardworking
  • Work closely with the Data Manager to solve queries
  • Perform any other duties assigned or delegated by the study management.
  • Must be able to relate well with Ministry of Health staff and the community.

Terms of Employment: 1(one) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service with probation in the first 3 months.
Remuneration: Salary is negotiable within the appropriate KEMRI pay grade depending on education and experience.


2. Data Specialist

Essential Qualifications

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Data Analyst, the Data Specialist will be responsible for the data management procedures of the various sites within the study area. S/he will be expected to work on various databases and therefore should be able to prioritize tasks to meet set deadlines.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct 100% source data verification, validation, and discrepancy management
  • Perform data cleaning and quality assurance and control
  • Ensure all missing data are captured in compliance to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards and within strict study timelines
  • Ensure that data is routinely backed up, anti-virus scans are conducted, and security measures are adhered to in order to protect data
  • Troubleshoot and solve common electronic data capture system problems
  • Ensure timely and accurate data entry and validation
  • Ensure timely response to data requests
  • Provide field support to the study teams, as needed
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor

Terms of Employment: 1(one) year contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience, and demonstrated competency.

3. Field Supervisor

Job Summary: The Regional Field Supervisor (Feasibility Component of MVPE) position requires the incumbent to supervise multiple teams of community interviewers during a large cross-sectional household survey taking place in 46 sub-counties in 8 counties (Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, and Vihiga) in western Kenya. Each Regional Field Supervisor will be responsible for the following duties in approximately one third of the area, including: coordination, field staff supervision, quality control, data management, logistics and operations management, community coordination and sensitization, and reporting in an accurate and timely fashion.

Person specification:

  • Diploma in Social Sciences, Community Health, Public Health, or other related field.
  • Excellent knowledge and Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in English and Swahili, written and spoken, with fluency in the local language spoken in the study area being an added advantage

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • The Regional Field Supervisor (Feasibility component) is the senior member of the field team. She/He is responsible for the well-being and safety of team members from 4 teams, as well as the completion of the assigned workload and the maintenance of data quality. The supervisor receives her/his assignments from, and reports to, the Field Coordinator, Study Coordinator, and the Study PIs. The specific responsibilities of the supervisor are to:
  • Make the necessary preparations for the fieldwork;
  • Organize and direct the fieldwork; and
  • Monitor interviewer performance with the aim of improving and maintaining the quality of the data collected.
  • To prepare for fieldwork, the supervisor must do the following:
  • Obtain sample household lists and maps for each area in which his/her team will be working.
  • Become familiar with the area where the team will be working and determine the best arrangements for travel and accommodations.
  • Contact local authorities to inform them about the survey and gain their support and cooperation.
  • Obtain all monetary advances, supplies, and equipment necessary for the team to complete its assigned interviews and parasitemia tests.
  • Lead training of field staff

During the fieldwork, the supervisor will do the following:

  • Assign work to interviewers, taking into account the linguistic competence of individual interviewers and ensuring that there is an equitable distribution of the workload.
  • Maintain fieldwork control sheets and make sure that assignments are carried out.
  • Regularly send (or upload) completed questionnaires and progress reports to the central office and keep headquarters informed of the team’s location and progress.
  • Communicate any problems to the field coordinator/study coordinator/PIs.
  • Arrange for lodging and food for the team. Accountability procedures (financing/receipts) will be specified by KEMRI.
  • Take charge of the team vehicles, ensuring that it is kept in good repair and that it is used only for project work. Coordinate team’s use of public transportation when vehicles are not used.
  • Ensure that biowaste materials are disposed of in accordance with the standard protocol.
  • Conduct regular review sessions with each interviewer and advise them of any problems found with their work.
  • Ensure completed consent forms and questionnaires are kept in order and pack them up to be sent to the central office.
  • Other responsibilities:
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of project design and goal and ensure that the project is conducted in compliance with project protocols and other regulatory requirements.
  • Work with the data manager to resolve any data queries in the field.
  • Respond to questions about the project posed by participants, field coordinators, study coordinators, and/or PIs.
  • Provide progress reports and solve reported problems encountered in the field to superiors.
  • Arrange community sensitization activities.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by field coordinators, study coordinators and/or PIs.

Terms of Employment: 5 months Fixed Term contract.
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.


4. Clerk (Data)

  • Ensure data is entered accurately and timely – meet data team allocated targets

  • Work with Data Specialist to ensure that data is routinely backed up, anti-virus scans are conducted, and data security measures are adhered to protect data and patient confidentiality
  • Deal with routine problems or issues that arise during data handling
  • Perform data cleaning and QA
  • Work well with members of the program/research teams including Laboratory technologists, field workers & field supervisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Data Manager

Terms of Employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service.

5. Laboratory Interns

Project description: The Kenya Medical Research Institute is committed to providing the youth with opportunities to acquire, sharpen their knowledge and gain technical/practical skills to complement their studies in order to enhance their employability in line with the Kenya Vision 2030. The KEMRI internship program (KIP) seeks to develop a pool of young talent adequately exposed to working in the research industry. After the planned one year (Non-renewable) internship program, the candidates will have gained practical workplace experience to enable them to have a competitive edge in their job search.

Internship Area: Laboratory – Intern (2 positions)

Project: Malaria Branch, Laboratory Section, MALCOV study

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences (Medical Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Medical biotechnology, Microbiology) or any relevant field from a recognized university in
Kenya.

Terms of Engagement:

Appointment in the Internship program will be for a period of one year. The successful candidate (s) will be paid a monthly stipend without any other benefits. Interns will be expected to take up a personal
accident cover and medical insurance cover for the period of the internship.


6. Administrative Intern

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with finance on activities related to budgets for new funding, project/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, developing and planning budgets for each project strategic area and assists in forecasting future resource needs.
  • Track expenditure and prepare timely reports for submission to Project Manager, PIs, Partners and Donors
  • Review financial and administrative vouchers and monitor MPESA payments.
  • Recommend approvals of project operating invoices and vouchers for payment.
  • Liaise with finance to ensure funds are available before processing LPOs and with relevant departments to ensure Request for Purchases is completed for timely procurement and delivery of project supplies.
